SILK PAINTING - THE WATER-RESIST TECHNIQUE
Silk painting starts with a white piece of Habutai silk stretched on a frame to create a canvas. After minimal sketching on paper to establish the intended theme of a piece, gutta lines are drawn on the stretched silk. Gutta is a type of glue made to be used on silk to define a design and limit the spreading of ink on the fabric. Such dispersion of the ink can be used in some areas to create interesting gradients and texture, or stopped to outline shapes.

Once the painting stage is completed, the piece of silk comes off the frame and goes through a steaming process that sets the colors so they are safe if they come in contact with moisture. After this final process the painted silk can find purpose in a frame, a lantern, scarf or special project.

SILK PAINTING CLASSES
Claire Vassort teaches silk painting to groups and individuals. Group classes take place in selected locations according to the group (groups of up to 8 students). Individual classes (one or two students) happen at Claire's studio.

Classes typically are full day (6 hrs of instruction) or half-day (3 hrs of instruction) workshops. If you have a specific project in mind for one-on-one classes, the instruction may be adapted to your idea. Feel free to contact Claire to schedule a group or individual class.

Community projects are also an important part of Claire Vassort's work. Contact Claire to see how her involvement may benefit your project.
